The tournament labelled 16 has the property that no set of three players meet togther more than once. In contrast, in the 16* tournament sets of four players play a mini-tournament of three consecutive games amongst themselves. The former design is more sociable, the latter is quicker (as, in most rounds, when a game finishes all four players and the venue are immediately available to start the next game).

The pure 9-player tournament has nine rounds, each of which consists of two games of two-versus-two and one player having a bye. The mixed 9-player tournament has twelve rounds, each of which consists of three games of two-versus-one.
